A good friend of mine in Charlotte, NC, Cynthia Meacham is in Presbyterian Hospital (down town) after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. She has a newborn son as well as two other sons under the age of four. Please take a moment now to pray for her full recovery.
What she has is a very rare and very serious nervous system disorder. It attacks the nervous system and can do serious damage. From what I understand, Cynthia is already partially paralyzed in her legs and cannot walk. She is very low in spirits and needs much prayer & support. She will have to relearn how to walk as well as perhaps other things.
Here is a note from her husband Ryan (who is by the way also struggling with health issues):
Cynthia is in a lot of pain still
and is on two types of pain medication, local pain relievers, a blood
thinner to lessen the possibility of blood clots, and a treatment that
weakens her immune system so that it will stop attacking her nerves.
She is already doing physical and occupational therapy and will have to
continue that for an indefinite period of time. The occupational
therapist is recommending that after the treatment, she is moved to a
rehab facility for some time to speed her recovery, but the doctors
have the final say on that. While this is a rare disorder, and most
people recover, Cynthia is aware that ironically her own grandmother
died from this same syndrome. She is still pretty miserable and I will
be spending the next several days with her. We do covet your prayers
and support.
If you are in the Charlotte area, know that this family could also use physical support even if they don't ask for it. I don't know who is taking care of their home and children every day or if someone from Hickory Grove is organizing something. I don't know which room she is in, or how they are handling visitors. If you want to send them a card or something to let them know you are praying, I'm sure that would be also appreciated.
