The castle is located in the Swabian Albs, where it is very beautiful. The first huge difference from the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, besides the smaller size, is that the parking is practically on the same level as the castle. At Neuschwanstein, visitors much either climb the mountain or take the offered bus or horse carriage transportation from the parking area at the bottom of the mountain. Whew, that was a relief since Lichtenstein is also located on a mountain top.
It was not as crowded as we expected for such a beautiful day. We got a parking spot under the trees and noticed right away a perfect picnic spot under three trees in the middle of a grassy field. There were other families grilling out on the other side of the field with children playing on the toys, the distance keeping their noise low. At the entrance of the parking lot was a man playing one of those wind up organs for donations, so that made a very nice sound. After our picnic, Gerhard laid down and practically immediately began snoring. Difficult not to sleep with the gentle summer breeze bringing the soothing sounds of the wind-up organ our way.
Here we are at the picnic spot.

Here's the castle which can be toured inside for 5 Euro or just the courtyard for 1 Euro. We decided to save the inside tour for our next visit. We will for sure be back.

Here is the castle chapel.

This is the back side of the castle.

In the area there are many caves to tour, but we decided to do that next time since it was only 50° in the caves and we didn't have jackets with us.
