You would have been forced onto a train with hundreds of others. When the doors open you would step out onto this street.

You would be lead through this gate as you read the inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work Brings Freedom or Freedom Through Work).

Once inside, a decision would be made based on who you are, such as nationality, race, gender, status in society, etc. You would see a wide open space, though very likely filled with prisoners standing in attention no matter the weather condition.

Had you been deemed unnecessary, you would have walked passed the "roll-call" area, over a bridge and through another gate, leaving other prisoners behind. It may have been also possible that you would have passed by a family member, neighbor, or friend as they stood for roll-call. You would not have been allowed to communicate to them, they however would know your destination, though be unable to say or do anything.

Pass the trees, you'd walk towards a brick building.

You would enter these doors...

looking back at the outside world wondering so many things and wishing for home.

You would have to undress to enter, with the others in your group, the door with the inscription Brausebad (shower bath).

You would wait for the water, but realize quickly, the gas seeping through the holes would be ending your life. The last sight you would see would be this room, or perhaps the face of your child or friend sent with you.

Your body would then be disposed of in one of these ovens.

Had you been deemed a worker, you would have been assigned to one of these bunkers.

This would be your bed, shared with many others.

Had you been perhaps someone with a position in society, you would have been sent to one of these cells.

One of the ways you would have been torchured is by kneeling across this bench to be whipped.

You would have planted these trees outside the bunkers, as well as other hard labor most hours of the day with little sleep and little food. During the few moments of "free time", you would be able to roam between these trees conversing with other prisoners.

No matter what your position, once inside that gate, there would be no escape!

Due to many groups, the concentration camp of Dachau has been turned into a memorial to remind the world of the horrors mankind can produce.

Inscription reads: The Dead to Honor, The Living to Warn (To Honor the Dead, To Warn the Living)

Inscription reads:
Crematorium: Think About How We Died Here

Never Again

A sculpture at Dachau.

It still amazes me that this ever happened and that there are people today who denied it did. I'll bet it was a very somber feeling being there.
